Kevin Costner Felt Uneasy During a Scene in Yellowstone Season 2

Kevin Costner is a Hollywood icon, especially known for his roles in contemporary westerns, but he also has a reputation for being a bit challenging to work with. He clashed with Kurt Russell on their Elvis impersonator crime film “3000 Miles to Graceland,” and he left Taylor Sheridan’s hit series “Yellowstone” before the finale, citing scheduling issues and concerns about the number of spin-offs. On top of that, he’s apparently quite a picky eater.

During an interview with Delish, celebrity chef Gabriel “Gator” Guilbeau, who served as the head of craft services on Sheridan’s projects for five years, revealed that one particular scene in Season 2 really grossed out Costner, who plays John Dutton. In a moment that added authenticity to his performance, Costner had an unexpected on-camera reaction when confronted with a plate of grilled octopus, resulting in an unscripted exclamation.

Guilbeau described how, in the third episode of Season 2, “The Reek of Desperation,” he shocked Costner by placing grilled octopus in front of him. He recounted, “In no way, shape, or form would he ever eat the grilled octopus… He gave me this look, and it was a genuine reaction you see in the show of ‘Gator, what the h*** is that?’”

Costner even dropped an f-bomb, asking, “What the f*** is that?” before quickly asking someone at the table to pass the potatoes. This moment provided a rare laugh from the otherwise serious Dutton. Guilbeau shared that Costner prefers simpler, heartier meals, joking that he probably lived off canned chili and hot dogs before their meeting.

Interestingly, while John Dutton’s daughter Beth (played by Kelly Reilly) might be curious about trying new cuisines, Costner’s character clearly had no interest in Mediterranean fare. It’s amusing that a beautifully plated dish of grilled octopus could elicit such a strong reaction, especially when other actors have had to either pretend to eat or actually consume octopus on camera. For instance, Chace Crawford from “The Boys” pretended to eat an octopus character, while Choi Min-sik from “Oldboy” had to eat live octopuses for a scene, despite being a vegetarian.

It seems unlikely that Costner would ever go that far, preferring to stick to his traditional cowboy meals of beans and hot dogs. Given his commitment to westerns, it looks like he’ll be enjoying his straightforward diet for the foreseeable future.
