Kevin Costner, the acclaimed actor and filmmaker, recently opened up about an important life lesson he imparted to his son. In an interview with Hollywood Authentic regarding his latest film, Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 2, Costner reflected on his journey and the experience he shared with his 17-year-old son, Cayden, during the 2024 Venice Film Festival.
The 69-year-old filmmaker spent four memorable days at the festival for the film’s premiere, describing it as “a perfect experience.” He shared how Cayden has witnessed his dedication to the project throughout his life. “He’s seen me labor over the course of this movie. For his entire life, he’s known that I’ve talked about this thing. And then to see me not let go of the opportunity and to actually go out and make two of them—he was able to see the culmination of that,” Costner explained.
He emphasized the impact of the moment, noting, “It’s a weird thing when you look at your dad and see suddenly this movie playing, and the people standing and clapping for it. Maybe he saw something in not letting go of a dream and that you keep pushing.”
In June, Costner spoke to Access Hollywood at the premiere of Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1, where his younger son, Hayes, also featured in the film, praised his father’s mentorship. “It was so fun. Just working with my dad, I loved it,” Hayes said, expressing admiration for Costner’s directing skills, which he had not witnessed before.
Costner appeared genuinely moved by his son’s words, humorously responding to the praise, “It feels good.”
The Waterworld star has three children—Cayden, 17, Hayes, 15, and Grace, 14—with his estranged wife, Christine Baumgartner. He also has three adult children, Annie, 40, Lily, 37, and Joe, 36, from his first marriage to Cindy Silva, as well as a son, Liam, 26, with ex-girlfriend Bridget Rooney.
Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 2 premiered at the 81st Venice International Film Festival on September 7, 2024, with a release date expected in late 2024.
