“Kevin Costner Makes Bold Pivot After Yellowstone Exit and Horizon Flop – Signs On for First Ever Comedy”

Kevin Costner’s Surprising Career Pivot After Yellowstone Exit and Horizon Flop

Kevin Costner is making headlines again—this time for a surprising new career move following his dramatic departure from the hit TV series Yellowstone and the underwhelming performance of his passion project Horizon: An American Saga.

On Monday, Amazon MGM Studios announced that the two-time Academy Award winner, 70, has signed on to star in their upcoming dramedy Honeymoon with Harry alongside Jake Gyllenhaal. The film marks a significant shift for Costner, known for his work in Westerns and intense dramas.

Honeymoon with Harry follows a man (Gyllenhaal) who decides to go on a planned honeymoon trip with his would-be father-in-law (Costner) after the sudden death of his fiancée. The movie is based on Bart Baker’s 2016 novel and will be directed by Glenn Ficarra and John Requa.

This project is Costner’s first major role following the box office disappointment of Horizon, which opened in June 2024. Despite its poor financial performance, Costner remained proud of the film, stating, “I’m really happy that Horizon looks the way it’s supposed to on the big screen. Would I love for it to be a massive success? Of course. But what matters most is that it’s the film I envisioned.”

Though his departure from Yellowstone after five seasons was contentious, Costner has made it clear he has no plans to slow down. “I don’t even think about retiring,” he said. “I’ll just move on to the next thing that captures my imagination.”

The Dances with Wolves director and star added, “I’ve been lucky, but I’d like to think I’ve worked for it. Not everyone can follow the same blueprint. I just stay open to new ideas and follow what excites me.”

When asked about a “bucket list,” Costner said he doesn’t think in those terms. “I have a list—I just don’t call it that. My eyes are wide open. I want to do what makes a difference, not just for me, but for others.”

He emphasized that his passion for storytelling continues to drive him. “There are projects I still want to do. Some of the greatest surprises in my career may still be ahead of me.”

Costner began his acting career with 1981’s Sizzle Beach, U.S.A. and rose to fame with films like The Untouchables (1987), Field of Dreams (1989), and Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves (1991). He won two Oscars for Dances with Wolves in 1990 and has remained a powerful presence in both film and television, including his Emmy-winning role in the 2012 miniseries Hatfields & McCoys.

Most recently, he wrote, directed, and starred in Horizon: An American Saga, a four-part Western epic. While Chapter One struggled at the box office, Chapter Two premiered earlier this year at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival and was previously screened at the 81st Venice Film Festival. Its wide release is now pending after a delayed rollout.

As Costner steps into comedy for the first time with Honeymoon with Harry, fans and critics alike are eager to see this unexpected new chapter unfold.
