“Kevin Costner Reflects on Princess Diana’s Last Conversation and Its Impact on a Potential Movie Sequel”
Kevin Costner Reflects on Near-Sequel to The Bodyguard with Princess Diana
In a recent interview, Kevin Costner revealed that he almost collaborated with the late Princess Diana on a sequel to his iconic 1992 film, The Bodyguard. Currently involved in his own franchise, Horizon: An American Saga, Costner expressed that following Diana’s passing, he felt it would be impossible to replace her in any sequel.
The original film, which also featured Whitney Houston, Gary Kemp, Bill Cobbs, and Ralph Waite, was directed by Mick Jackson. Despite receiving mixed reviews, it was a major box office success.
During his appearance on The Howard Stern Show, Costner shared that he had plans for Bodyguard 2 and was in talks with Princess Diana. He recalled saying, “I’m going to do Bodyguard 2 and I think I can build this around you. Would you be interested?” To which she replied, “Yes. My life’s about to change.” Costner interpreted her words as a desire to embrace new opportunities.
In a subsequent conversation, when Diana asked about the possibility of a kissing scene, Costner was ready to include it. However, after her tragic death in a car accident, he felt he could not move forward with the project. “I could not replace Princess Di,” he noted, emphasizing that just as he wouldn’t have made Bodyguard without Whitney, a sequel would not feel right without Diana.
He acknowledged that it would have been a unique opportunity to feature a member of the royal family in a Hollywood film, making the collaboration even more special.
Costner’s Commitment to Strong Female Characters
In a separate discussion on Josh Horowitz’s Happy Sad Confused podcast, Costner elaborated on his filmmaking philosophy. While he admitted that he primarily makes movies for a male audience, he emphasized his commitment to portraying strong female characters. “I won’t make a movie unless I have strong women characters,” he stated, attributing his enduring popularity to this approach.
Costner assured fans that his upcoming Horizon films will continue to feature powerful female roles. He expressed gratitude to women for supporting his projects, saying, “I just can’t conceive of a movie without having [strong women].”
Horizon: An American Saga is an ambitious four-part film project that Costner has written, directed, and starred in, even financing it out of his own pocket. This passion project has been in the works since the 1980s and showcases his dedication to storytelling.
