“Kevin Costner Remains Open to Love: ‘I Won’t Let Anything Harden My Heart'”

Kevin Costner is approaching life with both an open mind and an open heart. Despite the challenges posed by his recent divorce from Christine Baumgartner, which he describes as a significant emotional hurdle, Costner has focused on his children and navigated the past year with resilience.

“You just keep going,” Costner, 69, shares in this week’s cover story about life following Baumgartner’s May 2023 divorce filing. “You stay engaged, you keep coaching the kids, and you stay interested in their lives. I had to.”

Costner, who shares custody of his three youngest children—sons Cayden, 17, and Hayes, 15, and daughter Grace, 14—with his ex-wife, remains open to the idea of romance despite the recent difficulties. “I think everyone would love to be in love,” he reflects. “There’s a wonderful feeling associated with it. It might look different than before, but I still love the possibility.”

The Field of Dreams star, who also has four adult children—Annie, 40, Lily, 37, Joe, 36, and Liam, 27—adds, “I’m not going to let anything harden my heart.”

Currently, Costner is deeply invested in his passion project, Horizon: An American Saga, a sweeping Western epic for which he invested $38 million of his own money and mortgaged property. “I’ve had a remarkable—and mostly beautiful—life,” he reflects on his nearly seven decades. “I’ve taken big risks and faced significant challenges, but I’ve never allowed them to harden me, and I won’t.”

Ultimately, Costner’s focus remains on his seven children. “It’s really about the children,” he says. “I am still teaching them, and I’m still learning myself.”
