Kevin Costner Reportedly Seeking Financial Help Following ‘Horizon’ Box Office Loss
Kevin Costner’s ‘Horizon’ Gamble Falters, But Netflix May Offer a Lifeline
Kevin Costner had high hopes for Horizon: An American Saga, his ambitious Western passion project. But despite his efforts and deep personal investment, the film struggled to connect with moviegoers in theaters. The first chapter of the planned four-part saga flopped at the box office, and the second installment never made it to theaters. Now, Costner is reportedly seeking financial support to keep the project alive.
To get Horizon off the ground, the 70-year-old actor-director poured $38 million of his own money into the production — far more than initially reported. “I know they say I’ve got $20 million of my own money in this movie,” Costner shared. “It’s not true. I’ve got now about $38 million in the film. That’s the truth.”
Unfortunately, the return on that investment didn’t materialize as hoped. When the first film hit theaters in June 2024, it brought in only $11 million during its opening weekend, and its box office numbers continued to disappoint. Later, when the film premiered on Netflix on December 30, 2024, it gained some traction and landed in the platform’s Top 10 — a glimmer of hope that helped reignite Costner’s determination to complete the saga.
However, that momentum might not be enough. According to insiders, Costner and his team are now looking for a financial partner — and Netflix may be the only company with the resources to rescue the project. “Kevin and his team need it to perform because right now, Netflix is the only company with deep enough pockets to completely bail him out of the hole Kevin has dug for himself with these movies,” a source revealed.
Costner remains committed to finishing the story he started. “I made a promise to myself,” he said. “I’m trying desperately to keep it and to bring it to people — these kind of giant stories — and I hope that people fall in love with these characters. I love this movie. I love the second one — and the third one’s even harder than the first two, and the fourth one completes the story.”
Behind the scenes, the saga has reportedly taken a toll on Costner — financially, physically, and intellectually. But he’s not backing down. He’s pushing to complete the franchise within the next 18 months, ideally with Netflix’s backing, and without sacrificing the scope of his vision.
As 2025 unfolds, Costner is hoping that Horizon gets a second chance — and a new lease on life — through streaming success.
