Kevin Costner Reveals the Key Reasons Behind the Failures of Western Movies and TV Shows
Kevin Costner: Insights on the Success and Failures of Western Movies and TV Shows
Kevin Costner is an iconic figure in American cinema, known for his enduring presence in the industry. With memorable performances in classics like “The Untouchables” and “Field of Dreams,” he has left an indelible mark on film history. However, his most significant association may be with the Western genre, particularly due to his Academy Award-winning film “Dances With Wolves.” More recently, he has gained renewed fame through the hit series “Yellowstone,” which has become a cultural phenomenon. Given his extensive experience in Westerns, Costner has valuable insights on what makes a Western great—or not.
In a 2022 interview with People, Costner explained his enduring passion for Westerns. While he won’t be in “Yellowstone” Season 5, the show has revitalized his career and allowed audiences to deeply engage with the Dutton family, enhancing character development. For Costner, this depth is crucial. A Western shouldn’t just be a series of shootouts.
“I’ve always believed that a good Western isn’t just about racing to the gunfight,” he said. “If you can build up the language and situations leading to that moment, it can create an extraordinary movie or TV show. But if the focus is solely on getting to the gunfight without understanding the characters or their complexities, then that’s a problem.”
Despite his successes like “Open Range” and “Dances With Wolves,” Costner has also faced setbacks, such as with “Wyatt Earp,” which left him frustrated. His experiences give him the authority to discuss the successes and failures of Westerns.
Costner emphasized that successful Westerns go beyond a simple good-versus-evil narrative. He noted that while “Yellowstone” has thrived as a modern Western, his recent project, “Horizon: An American Saga,” struggled. The first chapter underperformed at the box office and received mixed reviews, leading Warner Bros. to withdraw the second chapter without a new release date. The future of the remaining films remains uncertain.
Costner’s understanding of the Western genre is profound, stemming from his diverse roles as an actor and director. He believes that the best Westerns resonate on a deeper level. “Most Westerns fail because they simplify the conflict to just black hats and white hats,” he explained. “When done well, they challenge viewers to reflect on their own toughness and the difficult choices faced in the Old West.”
