Kevin Costner Says He “Believed” in ‘Yellowstone’ from the Beginning

As Kevin Costner promotes his upcoming project, Horizon: An American Saga, he’s giving fans a glimpse into why he initially joined Yellowstone. Costner’s portrayal of the strong, insightful patriarch John Dutton was pivotal in establishing the Taylor Sheridan series as a hit, helping it become a cultural sensation. However, amidst fan disappointment over his absence from the second part of Season 5, which has been shrouded in speculation about a feud between Costner and Sheridan, Costner has revealed a surprising fact: he never intended to stay on Yellowstone for so many seasons.

In a recent interview on the Armchair Expert podcast, Costner shared why he was drawn to the Western drama in the first place. “Yellowstone was just a really great script,” Costner said. “I was captivated by the world it created. I knew it was a soap opera, and that logic might be stretched a bit—you know, we’ve all done things that would land us in jail in real life.”

Costner’s attraction to the show’s dramatic and soap opera elements resonates with many fans. While the plot twists can be unrealistic and sometimes hard to believe, it’s this over-the-top drama that makes the show so engaging. Sheridan’s writing plays a significant role in the show’s chaotic allure, and Costner praised Sheridan’s skill.

“[Taylor Sheridan] has a great ear for dialogue, and he crafted the storylines authentically and engagingly,” Costner said. “He wrote my role, and Kelly [Reilly]’s role, with real depth. I had a lot of fun with it and recognized its quality, so I gave it my all.”
