“Kevin Costner Seeks ‘Big Check’ from Netflix for ‘Horizon: An American Saga’ After Box Office Disappointment”
Kevin Costner is reportedly hoping Netflix can help him out of the financial strain he’s found himself in with his passion project, Horizon: An American Saga.
Sources have shared that the former Yellowstone star, who directed, co-wrote, starred in, and personally financed the Horizon films, is counting on the series’ strong viewership on Netflix to convince the streaming giant to step in and fund the completion of the saga. An anonymous source close to Costner described how, despite his calm and level-headed public persona, the Horizon project has been an immense financial, physical, and intellectual stress behind the scenes.
Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter One grossed only $38 million internationally, well short of its $100 million budget, after its release in June 2024. However, the source emphasized that Costner remains hopeful due to the series’ impressive Netflix viewership. “Kevin and his team really need this to perform because Netflix is the only company with deep enough pockets to help him recover from the financial hole he’s in,” the source explained. With Netflix’s support, Costner could finish the remaining two films in the series “without having to compromise too much.”
Industry insiders believe that Netflix could eventually buy the rights to the entire Horizon series to help Costner out of debt. One source even claimed that Costner is facing an “eight-figure hole” but feels optimistic that Netflix will come through and bring the films to a global audience.
Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter One delves into 15 years of Western expansion post-Civil War through a diverse cast of characters, including Costner, Sienna Miller, Sam Worthington, and Jena Malone. Costner has been open about his financial investment in the project, which is expected to exceed $100 million once all four films are completed. He even joked during a live appearance on Today with Hoda & Jenna about mortgaging his home to finance the films.
“If there’s a way for me to fulfill a dream, if I have to look to myself, I do,” Costner said, referring to his personal investment.
Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter One is now streaming on Netflix.
