Kevin Costner Set to Star, Produce, and Co-Write Thriller ‘Headhunters’ Following Completion of ‘Horizon’
In his first feature project after directing the ambitious Western saga Horizon, which had a budget exceeding $100 million, Kevin Costner is set to star in and co-write the tropical surf thriller Headhunters. This film marks the directorial debut of Steven Holleran, the cinematographer from Missing.
Costner’s production company, Territory Pictures, will produce the film alongside Scott Steindorff of Stone Village Films. In Headhunters, Costner will portray a washed-up American expat with a mysterious past who finds himself in Bali, Indonesia. He assembles a group of surfers, led by a local photographer, in search of the perfect wave at an uncharted island. However, they soon discover that the island is home to an ancient tribe of headhunters fiercely protecting their land.
Station Eleven star Daniel Zovatto is also set to join the cast, having previously collaborated with Steindorff on the HBO limited series.
The film will also see production contributions from Howard Kaplan, Costner’s partner at Territory Pictures, along with Stone Village’s Dylan Russell, Lindsay Davis, and Stacey Woods.
Costner’s passion project Horizon: An American Saga – Part 1 premiered at the Cannes Film Festival, grossing $38.2 million globally. The sequel, Part 2, premiered at Venice but was recently removed from Warner Bros.’ August theatrical release calendar. At Venice, Costner discussed the future of the Horizon series, expressing his commitment to completing it: “I don’t know how I’m gonna make [Part 3] right now, but I’m gonna make it.” He noted that the first three films totaled $98 million in production costs, and he plans for the fourth installment to push that figure over $100 million.
