Kevin Costner Shares How He Inspired Son Cayden to Pursue His Dreams Through “Horizon: An American Saga”

Kevin Costner is imparting a powerful life lesson to his son.

In a recent conversation with Hollywood Authentic about his new film, Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 2, the 69-year-old actor revealed how he shared his intense journey of creating the film with his 17-year-old son, Cayden.

“It’s been a perfect experience, really,” Costner said of the four days he and Cayden spent together at the 2024 Venice Film Festival, where the film premiered.

“He’s witnessed my dedication to this project. For his entire life, he’s heard me talk about it,” Costner reflected. “Seeing me persist through challenges and actually complete not just one, but two films, he saw the result of that perseverance.” He added, “It must be a strange feeling for him to see his dad’s work on screen, with people applauding. Hopefully, he’s learned about the importance of holding onto dreams and pushing through.”

Costner, known for his role in Yellowstone, shares Cayden, 17, Hayes, 15, and Grace, 14, with his now-estranged wife, designer Christine Baumgartner. He is also a father to three adult children—Annie, 40, Lily, 37, and Joe, 36—with his ex-wife Cindy Silva, and son Liam, 26, with former partner Bridget Rooney.

At the premiere of Horizon: An American Saga Chapter 1 in June, Costner was joined by his son Hayes, who also appears in the film. Hayes expressed his admiration for working with his father, saying, “It was incredible. Working with my dad was so much fun. He taught me so much, and watching him direct was amazing, especially since I’d only seen him act before.”

Costner appeared moved by Hayes’ words. When asked about the impact of his son’s praise, he admitted, “It feels good.” He struggled to hold back tears, donning sunglasses and placing a comforting arm around Hayes as they continued the interview.
