Kevin Costner Shares Prince William’s Confession About Princess Diana’s Affection for Him

On Tuesday, Yellowstone star Kevin Costner shared with People that Prince William once told him his late mother, Princess Diana, “kind of fancied” him.

The unexpected meeting took place a few years ago while Costner was visiting England. “I got a message saying the prince would love to talk, and I was like, ‘What?’… and then I thought, ‘Okay,'” Costner recounted.

The 69-year-old actor described his encounter with the Prince of Wales as “very sweet” and reminisced about the fond memories he has of their conversation. “We met in this room, and it was just us. He walked up, and we shook hands… The first thing he said was, ‘You know, my mom kind of fancied you.’” While Costner kept the specifics of their discussion private, he noted that Prince William made a positive impression, calling him “quite a young man.”

“I’ll never disclose what we talked about, but it was a very sweet exchange. I have such fond memories of who he is and what we discussed,” Costner added.

This wasn’t Costner’s first connection to the British royal family. Years earlier, he had discussions with Princess Diana about a potential sequel to his 1992 hit film, The Bodyguard, which starred Whitney Houston. He credited Sarah Ferguson, Duchess of York, with facilitating the introduction to Diana.

“There was a moment when the project was gaining momentum, very quietly, as that’s how I operate,” Costner explained. He praised Sarah for her generosity, saying, “It was so sweet. She could have been thinking, ‘I’m a princess too. What about me?’ but she didn’t at all. Diana and I began to talk.”

Costner remembered Diana as being “incredibly sweet” during their phone conversations, noting that she asked, “Are we going to have like a kissing scene?” He added that she approached the question with respect, reflecting her nervousness as her life was heavily governed by royal protocol.
