Kevin Costner Shares Unexpected Insights on the Future of Yellowstone Following His Departure
Kevin Costner has expressed hope for a return to Yellowstone, despite his dramatic exit from the show last year.
In May, it was reported that the Paramount series, centered on Montana landowner John Dutton (Costner) and his family’s conflicts, would conclude with its fifth and final season. The first half aired from November 2022 to January 2023, with the final episodes set to release this November.
Recently, Costner told Entertainment Tonight that he hasn’t completely ruled out a comeback. “I’d like to be able to do it, but we haven’t been able to,” he stated. “I thought I was going to make seven [seasons], but right now we’re at five. I hope it works out—there are a lot of different shows happening. Maybe this will circle back to me. If it does and I feel comfortable with it, I’d love to return.”
The actor also shared that he has contemplated how John Dutton’s story could conclude. “He needs to be proactive in what happens, and I have my own ideas about it,” Costner revealed, “but that’s ultimately Taylor’s decision. I shared my thoughts with him a while back, but we’ll just have to see.”
Costner addressed his unexpected departure from Yellowstone during his divorce testimony last November. He described the situation as “complicated,” mentioning that he had “negotiated” to return for more seasons. However, he noted, “There were issues about creative differences. I tried to break the logjam, but they walked away.” Reports indicate that he might pursue legal action regarding the matter.
His scheduling conflicts were likely due to his commitment to Horizon: An American Saga, a passion project that he has been developing for 35 years. The film is set to premiere at Cannes in May, followed by a two-part release on June 28 and August 16.
Showrunner Taylor Sheridan previously commented, “My last conversation with Kevin was about his desire to direct this passion project. The network and he were discussing when he could finish Yellowstone, and I said, ‘We can certainly work on a schedule to accommodate his preferred exit.’”
