Kevin Costner to Revive 1995 Flop “Waterworld” with New Surf-Horror Film Set in Bali
Almost thirty years after the notorious flop “Waterworld,” Kevin Costner is set to dive back into ocean-themed cinema with a surf-horror film titled “Headhunters,” scheduled for release next year.
In “Headhunters,” Costner, now nearly seventy, takes on the role of Lazer, a down-and-out American ex-pat living in Bali, who has a shadowy past. He teams up with a group of surfers, led by local photographer Bima, on a quest to discover the “perfect wave” at an uncharted island. However, their adventure takes a dark turn when they encounter an ancient tribe of headhunters fiercely protecting their territory.
The film promises to blend the vibrant energy of surf culture with the thrills of horror, transforming what initially appears to be a tropical paradise into a nightmare.
Costner is collaborating with producer Scott Steindorff and Stone Village Films to bring this project to life. Steindorff expressed his enthusiasm, saying, “For years, Kevin and I have been searching for the right project to work on together. This script is one of the best I’ve encountered in my career. Kevin is a legendary actor who brings incredible depth and charisma to his roles, and he’s crafted an iconic horror narrative alongside Steve.”
With this intriguing premise, one has to wonder: could “Headhunters” earn its place among the cinematic greats—or perhaps, the worst films ever made? After all, can anything truly dethrone the infamous 2016 remake of “Ghostbusters”?
