Kevin Costner Unveils Trailer for Upcoming Western Docuseries ‘The West’

Kevin Costner Unveils First Trailer for New History Channel Docuseries ‘The West’

Kevin Costner’s passion for the Western genre continues with his latest project: Kevin Costner’s The West, a new documentary series premiering on the History Channel. The Oscar-winning actor, director, and writer—known for classics like Dances With Wolves and his recent epic Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1—serves as both host and executive producer of the eight-part docuseries.

The first trailer for The West was recently released, giving fans a glimpse into the tone and scope of the project. In the opening moments, Costner poses the question, “What do we see when we think of The West?” The trailer blends expert commentary with dramatized reenactments, setting the stage for a deep dive into the real stories behind America’s western expansion.

The series explores the dreams and conflicts of those who attempted to settle the western frontier—from pioneers, cowboys, and outlaws, to the Native American tribes who resisted the encroachment on their ancestral lands. Each episode aims to capture the complex history of ambition, survival, and identity that shaped the American West.

Kevin Costner’s The West premieres May 26 on the History Channel with a two-episode debut, followed by a special presentation of Episode 3 on May 27. New episodes will continue airing Mondays at 9 p.m.

According to the official series logline:

Kevin Costner’s The West takes viewers on an epic journey through the birth of the American West, examining the relentless competition for land, power, and identity that forged our nation’s history. With legends born from figures such as Lewis and Clark and Sacagawea to the clashes between lawmen and outlaws, the rise of cowboys and ranchers, the resilience of trailblazing women, and the fervor of fortune seekers and abolitionists, this series spans a century of pivotal events. By presenting these stories from diverse perspectives, the series illuminates both the indelible contributions of the pioneers who shaped the dream of the American West and the courageous resistance of Native American tribes who valiantly defended their ancestral land.”

What About Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 2?

While fans eagerly anticipate more from Costner’s Horizon saga, the future of Chapter 2 remains uncertain. Originally slated for release in Fall 2024, the sequel was shelved after Chapter 1 underperformed at the box office—despite finding success later on streaming platforms.

Horizon: Chapter 2 had its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival in September 2024, and also screened at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival in February 2025. Though there was hope that these screenings would spark interest from a new distributor, no official release date has been confirmed. For now, The West offers fans another compelling window into Costner’s enduring fascination with America’s frontier history.
