Kevin Costner Worried About Looking Old on ‘Yellowstone’ Set

Kevin Costner Reportedly Asked ‘Yellowstone’ Co-Star to Dye Grey Hair to Avoid Looking Like an Older Father

Kevin Costner, 69, who played ranch patriarch John Dutton on the hit Paramount Network series Yellowstone, reportedly requested that his on-screen son cover up his grey hair to avoid appearing too old on screen.

Dave Annable, 45, who portrayed Lee Dutton, opened up about the experience while promoting season two of his current series Lioness. He revealed he was finally allowed to embrace his natural grey hair for the new role — something that wasn’t permitted on Yellowstone.

“I asked, and this one they said, ‘Yes,’” Annable shared. “I asked on Yellowstone, and God bless Mr. Costner, he was like, ‘No – you’re going to dye it. I don’t want to look that old.’ I was like, ‘Oh, okay. Copy that. That makes sense.’”

During his time on Yellowstone, Costner reportedly earned $1.3 million per episode. Since leaving the show, however, he’s shifted focus to his passion project — an ambitious western film series titled Horizon: An American Saga.

Costner invested heavily in the first installment, which premiered in 2024. While the film didn’t make a huge splash at the box office, he remains hopeful about its long-term reception.

“It didn’t have overwhelming success,” he said at the 2024 Venice Film Festival. “But I’ve had a lot of movies that way, that have stood the test of time.”

The sequel, Chapter 2, was initially set to release six weeks after the first, but plans were delayed. Still, Costner sees a silver lining: “It fell back into my plan, which was always to release the movies about five to six months apart. And that allowed me to come to Venice — I wouldn’t have been able to if the film had already been released.”
