“Kevin Costner’s Emotional Take on Horizon’s Uncertain Future”

Despite not meeting box office expectations, Kevin Costner remains optimistic about finishing his epic Western saga, Horizon. Produced on a $50 million budget, Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1 earned only $34 million during its brief theatrical run. To recover some of the losses, the film was quickly made available for rent or purchase on PVOD platforms. The release of Chapter 2, initially scheduled for earlier this month, has been postponed and will now debut at the 81st Venice International Film Festival on September 7. It’s uncertain if it will eventually be released in theaters or go straight to streaming.

In an in-depth interview with TODAY, Costner, who wrote, starred in, and directed the saga, discussed the future of Chapters 3 and 4. He revealed that although Chapter 3 is partially filmed, he’s determined to complete the series. Costner emphasizes his commitment to the project, driven by a promise he made to himself.

“I love this journey. It’s been the hardest thing I’ve ever done, but I love these movies. The second one is fantastic, and the third is even more challenging than the first two, with the fourth completing the story. I made a promise to myself to bring this giant tale to life, and I hope audiences connect with these characters. I’ve already filmed some of Chapter 3 and plan to shoot the remaining parts back to back next spring.”
