“Kevin Costner’s ‘Field of Dreams’ Co-Star Opens Up About On-Set Dynamics After Praising Ray Liotta”

Kevin Costner’s Field of Dreams Co-Star Reflects on Their Offscreen Dynamic – And It Wasn’t Exactly a Dream

Kevin Costner has built an iconic Hollywood legacy with standout performances in films like Field of Dreams (1989), Dances with Wolves (1990), and more recently, the hit series Yellowstone (2018). But while audiences have long admired his performances, not all of his co-stars seem to have shared the same admiration for him behind the scenes.

This was particularly evident in the case of Field of Dreams, where actress Gaby Hoffmann, who played Costner’s young daughter in the film, revealed that her experience working with him wasn’t as warm as the on-screen relationship might suggest.

Gaby Hoffmann Says She Didn’t Feel a Paternal Connection with Costner

In the 1989 sports-fantasy classic, Costner played Ray Kinsella, a devoted Iowa farmer who builds a baseball field that brings back legendary players from the past. Hoffmann, just 7 years old at the time, portrayed his daughter Karin. While their father-daughter bond was central to the film’s emotional core, Hoffmann recently shared that this chemistry didn’t extend offscreen.

Now 42, Hoffmann reflected on her experience in a brief but telling comment:
“I didn’t feel paternal energy from Kevin Costner. We’ll leave it at that.”

Though she chose not to elaborate further, the remark suggests a cool or distant working relationship between the two — quite the contrast to the heartfelt dynamic portrayed in the movie.

In Contrast, Ray Liotta Left a Lasting Impression on Her

Unlike her reserved comments about Costner, Hoffmann had nothing but glowing memories of another co-star: the late Ray Liotta, who played Shoeless Joe Jackson in the film.

“I just absolutely loved Ray,” she said, remembering him with deep fondness. “I was convinced he was in love with me, too — which, of course, he wasn’t — but he was just such a sweetheart.”

Hoffmann went on to describe the special connection she felt with Liotta, attributing it to the kind of fatherly presence she craved during her childhood.
“I didn’t have a dad growing up, and I think I was really drawn to a kind of fatherly, protective energy that he had in spades,” she shared. “What a beautiful actor he was, too.”

She even recalled joking with Liotta about having a crush on him, charmed by his kindness and warmth on set. Sadly, Field of Dreams was the only project they worked on together — and the last time she ever saw him before his passing in 2022.

Onscreen Bond vs. Offscreen Reality

While Kevin Costner convincingly played the doting father on screen, it was Ray Liotta who left a real-life impact on Gaby Hoffmann. Her recollections highlight a behind-the-scenes contrast that fans of the film might find surprising — and a reminder that great performances don’t always reflect real-life relationships.
