“Kevin Costner’s Heartfelt Promise to Whitney Houston: A Commitment Kept”
Kevin Costner recently opened up about how he took the role of Whitney Houston’s bodyguard beyond the screen in a conversation on Dax Shepard’s “Armchair Expert” podcast. Reflecting on their friendship while co-starring in the 1992 film “The Bodyguard,” Costner discussed the profound connection he formed with Houston.
Promoting his upcoming film “Horizon: An American Saga,” Costner reminisced about casting Houston, which he insisted on from the beginning. Shepard, who expressed his admiration for Houston—who passed away in 2012—was curious about Costner’s experience during the film.
Costner revealed that the film’s director, Mick Jackson, seemed uncomfortable during certain scenes with Houston. Feeling protective, Costner began to guide her, clarifying that his intent was to support Houston, not undermine the director. He made a promise to Houston that she would shine in the film, a commitment he was determined to uphold even as early audience tests were less than favorable.
“My promise to her was that she would always be great in this movie,” he said, referencing her iconic rendition of “I Will Always Love You,” a centerpiece of the soundtrack. Costner emphasized his dedication to ensuring Houston was portrayed positively.
His admiration for Houston was also evident in the heartfelt eulogy he delivered at her funeral. He recalled the pressure of the moment, saying, “There were people staring daggers at me, and I just spoke from my heart.”
Costner described Houston as a “once in a generation” talent, a sentiment shared by Shepard. He recounted how he established a supportive environment for Houston during filming, allowing her to have her best friend, Robyn Crawford, by her side while setting boundaries about entourage dynamics. He understood the significance of their bond, stating, “I knew it would never be the same for her when she left me.”
As a result of their collaboration, he felt he became her “imaginary bodyguard,” reflecting the lasting impact of their relationship both on and off screen.
