Kevin Costner’s ‘Horizon: An American Saga — Chapter 2’ to Have U.S. Premiere at Santa Barbara International Film Festival
Kevin Costner’s ambitious western film series continues with Horizon: An American Saga — Chapter 2, which will make its U.S. premiere at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.
The film had its world premiere last fall at the Venice Film Festival, following the first installment, Horizon: An American Saga — Chapter 1, which debuted last spring at the Cannes Film Festival. During the Cannes event, Costner engaged in extensive discussions about the Horizon series. At the Santa Barbara festival, both films will be screened back-to-back on the same day at the Arlington Theatre, with Chapter 1 showing at 2 p.m. and Chapter 2 at 6 p.m. After the second screening, Costner—a Santa Barbara native who co-wrote and directed the series—will participate in a Q&A.
In addition to the films, the festival will also present Beyond the Horizon, a behind-the-scenes documentary on the making of the Horizon series. Followed by a Q&A with Costner and the documentary’s director, Mark Gillard. The conversation will be moderated by SBIFF programming director Claudia Puig.
The combined budget for the two Horizon films reportedly totaled $100 million, with Costner personally investing $38 million. Despite high expectations, the first film grossed a modest $38 million worldwide, casting uncertainty over the release plans for the second installment and Costner’s hopes for completing the third and fourth chapters in the series.
