“Kevin Costner’s Horizon: Sam Worthington Really Doesn’t Offer Much of an Update”
Kevin Costner’s Horizon Saga Remains in Limbo, and Sam Worthington Isn’t Saying Much Either
So, where exactly do things stand with Kevin Costner’s long-gestating Western epic?
Costner’s passion project, Horizon: An American Saga, is a planned four-part Western film series, heavily financed by the actor-director himself. So far, he’s completed two of the films.
The first chapter, Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1, hit theaters in summer 2024 to lukewarm reviews and a lackluster box office performance. As a result, the intended summer release of Chapter 2 was shelved. Costner has reportedly filmed just under ten minutes of Chapter 3 but has since run out of funding—leaving nearly two full movies still to shoot.
Since then, Chapter 2 has yet to secure a proper release date. Interestingly, Chapter 1 found a second life on Netflix in the U.S., where it became a surprise streaming hit. Netflix is rumored to be interested in backing the remaining films, but Costner is adamant that the series belongs on the big screen. Unfortunately, as ever, Netflix and traditional cinemas don’t make for easy partners.
Adding to the delays are a series of legal entanglements that continue to slow down progress.
Meanwhile, Sam Worthington—one of the saga’s stars—has been doing the press rounds for other projects. When asked about Horizon, he confirmed that Costner has the entire four-film arc mapped out. Still, he kept his comments fairly neutral:
“That was Costner’s passion project — he’d been working on it for ten years. It all comes down to whether the audience connects. The passion is always there, but sometimes it’s just about whether it’s the right time for people to embrace it.”
Sadly for Costner, the audience did connect—but on streaming, not in cinemas, where he had hoped to make his biggest impact. Given the enduring popularity of Yellowstone, streamers may yet be willing to bankroll the remainder of the saga.
For now, though, Costner has shifted his focus to a new role: he’s set to co-star with Jake Gyllenhaal in Honeymoon With Harry. Perhaps the paycheck from that project will help inject some fresh cash into Horizon—but the future of the saga remains uncertain.
