“Kevin Costner’s ‘Horizon’ Scheduled for Max Release After Box Office Disappointment”

The rugged American West will soon be accessible from your living room: Kevin Costner’s “Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1” is set to premiere on Max on Friday, August 23. The first chapter of his ambitious western series, which Costner starred in, co-directed, co-wrote, produced, and co-financed, explores the lives of several characters in the American West during and after the Civil War. Originally envisioned as a four-film saga, the future of the series is uncertain following the poor box office performance of the first installment.

Despite a $100 million budget, “Horizon: Chapter 1” grossed only $11 million in its opening weekend, leading to the postponement of the sequel’s August 16 theatrical release. Costner reportedly invested $38 million of his own money into the project. The second film in the series is now scheduled to screen out-of-competition at the Venice Film Festival on September 7. A spokesperson from New Line Cinema explained that the delay was intended to allow audiences more time to discover the first installment through PVOD and Max.

The film’s cast includes Sienna Miller, Sam Worthington, Giovanni Ribisi, Jena Malone, Abbey Lee, Michael Rooker, Danny Huston, Luke Wilson, Isabelle Fuhrman, Tatanka Means, Owen Crow Shoe, Jamie Campbell Bower, and Thomas Haden Church. The first installment became available on PVOD on July 16, just a few weeks after its theatrical release on June 28.

Production on the third film began in May, with filming expected to continue in August. The script for the fourth and final installment is already in the hands of key crew members.
