“Kevin Costner’s ‘Horizon’ Set to Premiere on Max”

Kevin Costner’s ‘Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1’ Arrives on Max

Kevin Costner’s epic Western, Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1, is set to premiere on Max’s streaming platform. Following its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival in May and theatrical release on June 28, the film will be available for streaming on August 23.

Directed by and starring Costner, Horizon is the first installment of a planned four-film series exploring the expansion of the American West before and after the Civil War. The film features a robust ensemble cast, including Sienna Miller, Sam Worthington, Michael Rooker, Jena Malone, Wase Chief, Luke Wilson, Abbey Lee, and Danny Huston.

Distributed in theaters by New Line Cinema, a Warner Bros. subsidiary, Horizon will be accessible exclusively to Max subscribers. For those not subscribed to Max, the film remains available for digital rental or purchase through premium video on demand.

Reception and Financials

Horizon concluded its theatrical run on August 8 with a domestic box office gross of $29 million and an additional $2.4 million internationally, totaling $31.4 million worldwide. The film’s production budget was reported to be between $50 million and $100 million, with Costner investing $38 million of his own money and additional funds from private investors.

Critics on Rotten Tomatoes were divided, giving the film a 49% rating based on 148 reviews. The Critics Consensus noted that while Costner’s ambition is evident, the film’s broad scope made it less satisfying as a standalone chapter. In contrast, audience reviews were more positive, with a 70% “fresh” rating based on over 2,500 verified ratings.

As Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1 prepares for its streaming debut, the future of Chapter 2 remains uncertain. The film’s release date of August 16 was recently postponed, and it is now scheduled to make its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival on September 7. Costner has indicated that Horizon Chapter 1 will be screened before the Chapter 2 premiere in Venice.
