“Luke Grimes Hints at ‘Satisfying’ Finale for ‘Yellowstone'”
As anticipation builds for the highly awaited series finale of Yellowstone, Newsweek spoke with star Luke Grimes about what fans can expect in the concluding episodes. Grimes assures viewers that they will find the ending “satisfying.”
Premiering in 2018, the acclaimed series is set on a Montana ranch and chronicles the Dutton family’s ongoing battle to safeguard their land. The show features a stellar cast, including Kevin Costner (who has since left the series), Kelly Reilly, Wes Bentley, and Grimes himself.
Season 5, Part 1 aired from November 2022 to January 2023, with the second part of the final season scheduled to debut on November 10, 2024. In May 2023, it was announced that the fifth season would mark the series’ conclusion, following production delays linked to reported disputes between creator Taylor Sheridan and Costner, compounded by the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes.
As the final episodes approach, Grimes—who portrays Kayce Dutton, John Dutton’s youngest child and father to Tate—teased that the ending will be unpredictable. “True to Yellowstone‘s form, [viewers] won’t see it coming. The beauty of Taylor’s writing is that it’s always surprising,” he shared with Newsweek. “If I had tried to come up with an ending, I never would have thought of this one, but it’s perfect. It’s what you want from a great show—something that’s both unpredictable and satisfying.”
For context, Season 5, Part 1 saw John Dutton (Costner) becoming the governor of Montana, leveraging his political clout to shield the family’s ranch from corporate and environmental threats. Family tensions escalated when Jamie Dutton (Bentley) made a bold move to publicly impeach his father, while Beth Dutton (Reilly) discovered Jamie’s schemes and began plotting a ruthless retaliation. Meanwhile, Kayce Dutton (Grimes) faced personal struggles away from the ranch. The season concluded with these intense conflicts unresolved, leaving fans eager to see how the Dutton family saga will unfold.
The announcement of Yellowstone‘s abrupt ending came in May 2023 amid reports of creative differences between Costner and Sheridan. One point of contention reportedly involved Costner’s film project, Horizon: An American Saga, which he directed, produced, and co-wrote.
Despite the behind-the-scenes drama, Grimes expressed optimism about how the series has adapted. “I don’t have the full perspective on that situation. All I know is that the show rolled with the punches,” he explained. “We were able to finish the show in a way that I think will resonate with everyone.”
In addition to Yellowstone, Grimes has been pursuing various projects, including his music career. He released his self-titled debut album in March and will embark on his Playin’ On The Tracks Tour in November, performing in cities like New York, Nashville, and Los Angeles. He’s also working on new music inspired by his life experiences.
Furthermore, Grimes has teamed up with the iconic workwear brand Carhartt for its “History In The Making” campaign. He features in a short film titled Made in Montana, which honors the dedicated ranchers and farmers preserving their land and providing essential resources.
“Carhartt approached me about their Montana line and we decided to focus on the stories of those who have lived here for generations,” Grimes explained. “It was important for us to highlight their experiences and the changes in the valley while showcasing the ongoing fight to maintain its character.”
This collaborative effort emphasizes a genuine connection to Montana, reflecting Grimes’ appreciation for the community and its heritage.
