“Matt Blaker Cast as Lead in ‘The Bodyguard’ Musical, Replacing Costner’s Iconic Role”

Matt Blaker Steps Into the Spotlight as Frank Farmer in “The Bodyguard The Musical”

Who could forget Kevin Costner’s iconic performance as Frank Farmer in the 1992 romantic thriller The Bodyguard? More than 30 years later, that legendary role is being reimagined for the stage — and this time, it’s British actor Matt Blaker bringing it to life.

On September 26, Rockwell and 9 Works Theatrical are set to debut the acclaimed West End musical adaptation of The Bodyguard in the Philippines, with Blaker starring opposite Christine Allado as pop superstar Rachel Marron. Since arriving in Manila on August 20, Blaker has been fully immersed in rehearsals for his Philippine debut — and in discovering the warmth and charm of Filipino culture.

“I’m having a blast,” he shared. “I think the Filipino people are the most welcoming, gracious, and humble. They’ve welcomed me with open arms, and I couldn’t ask for more, really.”

Though he hasn’t had much time to explore beyond rehearsals, Blaker is already enjoying what little he’s seen of Metro Manila — mostly around Rockwell, where rehearsals are held. “It’s amazing and beautiful,” he said. The farthest he’s ventured so far is SM Molino in Cavite, but he’s already planning post-show adventures. “After opening night, I want to take some road trips and explore the countryside,” he added, naming Siargao and Moalboal in Cebu as top destinations. “I desperately want to try canyoneering.”

Canyoneering at Kawasan Falls in Badian, Cebu, offers thrilling activities like cliff jumping, river trekking, and sliding through natural rock formations — something Blaker is excited to try.

He’s also been pushing boundaries on the culinary front, sampling local snacks and dishes thanks to his Filipino castmates. “Every day, they introduce me to something new. Today, I had fish crackers,” he laughed.

Among local delicacies, rambutan has become his favorite fruit so far — though he admits he hasn’t mustered the courage to try balut just yet. One dish that did win him over? Pancit. “I loved it,” he said.

Standing at 6-foot-3, Blaker believes his portrayal of Frank Farmer will resonate strongly with Filipino audiences. “It’s such a great character to portray — someone with a strong sense of duty, and an even stronger sense of family. That really connects with Filipino values.”

He reflects on Farmer’s emotional journey in the story, especially his bond with Rachel and her son Fletcher. “He falls in love with that family environment — something he didn’t grow up with. That conflict between duty and personal connection makes the role so rich.”

Blaker also believes every role he takes on reflects a part of himself. “I bring my own emotional truth to Frank. I can never do what Costner did — he’s his own artist. But I can offer my own version, shaped by who I am and what I’ve lived through.”

Audiences can expect a performance that’s emotionally grounded and layered — from tense standoffs and romantic sparks with Rachel, to the complex dynamic with Nicki, Rachel’s sister, as the family navigates a dangerous stalker.

Don’t miss Matt Blaker in Rockwell and 9 Works Theatrical’s The Bodyguard The Musical, opening September 26 at the brand-new Proscenium Theater at Rockwell.
