Post-Yellowstone Twist: Kevin Costner Announces Unexpected TV Comeback

Kevin Costner Saddles Up Again – But This Time, He’s Telling the True Story of the American West

Yellowstone star Kevin Costner is making his highly anticipated return to screens — but not quite in the way fans might expect.

The Academy Award winner is trading fictional drama for historical truth in The West, a brand-new, eight-part documentary series where he’ll serve as both host and executive producer. Known for his deep connection to Western storytelling, Costner is now aiming to uncover the real stories that shaped the American frontier.

In The West, Costner teams up with Pulitzer Prize-winning historian Doris Kearns Goodwin to deliver a sweeping exploration of the Wild West. Far from romanticized Hollywood portrayals, the series dives deep into a century of grit, ambition, and survival — from lawmen and outlaws to ranchers, Native American tribes, and everyone in between.

Premiering May 28 exclusively on Stan, the series kicks off with a special triple-episode release. Watch the first glimpse in the video above.

“These stories will captivate us and shock us,” Costner says in the teaser. “Now it’s time to come face-to-face with the real story of our wild past.”

The announcement follows Costner’s recent work on Horizon: An American Saga, a Western epic he both directed and starred in, and arrives just months after the conclusion of his hit series Yellowstone.

Each one-hour episode of The West blends powerful archival footage, cinematic visuals, and expert commentary from renowned historians. The series examines the fierce struggles over land, power, and identity — elements that forged a turbulent yet defining era in American history.

From iconic explorers like Lewis and Clark and the vital role of Sacagawea, to pioneering settlers and the brave resistance of Indigenous peoples defending their homelands, The West promises a rich, unflinching portrait of the stories that shaped a nation.

If you’re a fan of Kevin Costner or a lover of Western history, The West is set to be an unforgettable ride.
