“Princess Diana ‘Offered a Movie Role’ in ‘The Bodyguard’ Sequel by Kevin Costner Who Promised ‘To Look After Her’ – ‘He Was So Charming’”
Princess Diana was reportedly approached by Hollywood actor Kevin Costner about starring in a sequel to The Bodyguard. The 70-year-old star reached out to the late royal to gauge her interest in pursuing acting, offering her a significant breakthrough role.
According to Diana’s former butler, Paul Burrell, who revealed the story in his new autobiography, he was the one who connected Costner’s call to the Princess, who found the idea amusing.
Burrell recalls, “Diana was offered the chance to follow in the footsteps of her future daughter-in-law, Meghan, by moving into acting. She was asked to appear in The Bodyguard II alongside Kevin Costner.
“I took the call from Mr. Costner and passed it on to her in the sitting room. I heard her laughing and saying, ‘But I can’t sing! What would I have to do? Still, okay, send it over and I promise I’ll take a look.’
“She told me after the call that Costner had offered her the lead role in a sequel to the blockbuster hit that starred Whitney Houston.
“Her part was to be a princess, with Kevin playing her bodyguard who would protect her.
“He assured her the film would be tasteful and promised to look after her.”
Diana found the offer charming but hard to believe. Burrell adds, “She laughed and said, ‘He must be joking.’ But Kevin was very serious, and the script for The Bodyguard II arrived.
“I don’t know if she ever read it, but she was flattered. Ultimately, she politely declined, saying, ‘It’s completely impossible.'”
Costner first spoke publicly about the scrapped sequel in 2012, explaining that the story would focus on him protecting Diana’s character from stalkers and paparazzi, with their relationship eventually turning romantic.
He recalled that Diana was initially enthusiastic about the project, telling him, “My life is about to change.” On a second conversation, they even agreed on including a kissing scene.
The original The Bodyguard was one of the top-grossing films of the early 1990s, earning over $400 million worldwide. Its soundtrack set records by selling more than 42 million copies, largely due to Whitney Houston’s iconic rendition of Dolly Parton’s I Will Always Love You.
Houston played the lead singer role, which was originally written for Diana Ross. The film’s success briefly made Houston one of the highest-paid actors of the mid-1990s.
The idea for the sequel reportedly came about during a trip to China, which Diana took alongside Costner, Sarah Ferguson (Duchess of York), and Hong Kong restaurateur David Tang.
In recent years, Costner has shared that his relationship with the Royal Family deteriorated following Diana’s death. About a year after she passed, it was revealed that he was preparing the sequel.
“The Royal Family kind of turned on me,” Costner said. “It got ugly, and I let it go for a while, but it just kept getting worse.”
