“Tom Selleck Admits He’s Never Sent a Text or Used Email: ‘I Struggle with Writing Things Down'”

Tom Selleck is well-known for his roles in classic TV and film, but his personal life reveals a surprising disconnect from modern technology. In this week’s cover story, the 79-year-old Blue Bloods star opens up about his minimal engagement with electronic communication.

“I’ve occasionally looked up my name,” Selleck shares, “but I’ve never sent an email myself. I had a secretary for that. I’ve never sent a text message either.”

Despite his tech-free stance, Selleck isn’t completely out of reach. His wife, Jillie, 66, whom he met in London in 1983, handles texting on his behalf. “I have a certain luxury because of her,” he admits. “I find it difficult to write things down, which is ironic for someone promoting a book.”

That book is his memoir, You Never Know, set for release this spring by Dey Street Books, an imprint of HarperCollins. In the memoir, Selleck reflects on his “accidental” career, spanning from his early days on dramas like The Young and the Restless to his iconic role as Thomas Magnum on the 1980s hit Magnum, P.I. He also delves into his childhood in California and his diverse career, including roles in Friends, Three Men and a Baby, and Las Vegas.

Looking back, Selleck acknowledges his career path is unconventional. “I don’t have the dramatic backstory that many actors do,” he says. “I didn’t go through rehabilitation or have a tragic life. I’ve faced my share of ups and downs, but I’ve been fortunate.”

Away from the spotlight, Selleck enjoys a tranquil life on his 63-acre ranch in Ventura County, California, where he takes pleasure in nature and the blooming wildflowers. He’s not much of a TV viewer himself, preferring to focus on scripts for his CBS show, Blue Bloods, which is currently in its final season.

Reflecting on his long career, Selleck emphasizes the dedication required to succeed in acting. “If you’re entering the acting business, you need to be prepared for the long haul,” he says. “I’ve tried to communicate that because it’s been quite a journey.”

You Never Know will be available in bookstores on May 7 and is currently available for preorder.
