Tom Selleck Discusses Emotional Farewell as Blue Bloods Concludes After 14 Seasons: ‘So Many Aren’t Ready to Let Go’

Tom Selleck Reflects on Blue Bloods Ending in Recent Interview

Tom Selleck, who has played Frank Reagan on Blue Bloods since its debut, recently shared his thoughts on the show’s upcoming conclusion in a new interview published Friday. At 79, Selleck is preparing for the release of his memoir and is not looking forward to the series’ end. He admitted that he has grown to love his role over the years and finds the work fulfilling, despite the occasional challenges of the demanding shooting schedule.

“I’m not counting the days to move on to something else,” Selleck said. “Sometimes the hours are a little harder because I’m older, but so what? I want to work as long as they’ll have me.” He also touched on the devoted fanbase, noting that the show remains incredibly popular and suggesting that CBS will see continued interest, with viewership potentially rising during the final season.

Selleck delved into the character of Frank Reagan, discussing how his internal struggle has been a central theme throughout the series. “He picks fights because he’d like somebody to take the weight of this responsibility off his hands and fire him. But he has a hyperactive sense of responsibility and he’s stuck with it,” he explained.

The actor also reflected on one of the show’s most beloved elements: the Reagan family’s weekly dinner. He recalled his initial skepticism about the scene, which was ultimately retained as a key feature of the series. “When I saw the eight-page dinner scene in [executive producer] Leonard Goldberg’s pilot script, I said, ‘They’re going to cut that, aren’t they?’ And he answered, ‘No, that will be a centerpiece of the show.'”

Since its debut on CBS in 2010, Blue Bloods has captivated audiences with its portrayal of a family deeply involved in law enforcement. In addition to Selleck, the show stars Donnie Wahlberg, Bridget Moynahan, and Steve Schirripa. With an average audience score of 81% on Rotten Tomatoes, the series has been a fan favorite.

The first part of the fourteenth and final season is set to premiere on February 16, with the concluding episodes scheduled to air this fall.
