“Tom Selleck Discusses the Future of ‘Blue Bloods'”

From his California ranch, Tom Selleck enjoys a stunning view, a fitting backdrop for a career that’s consistently been at the top. For the past 14 years, Selleck has starred as Frank Reagan on CBS’s Blue Bloods. With the show scheduled to end this year, Selleck remains hopeful it will continue. “We’re the third-highest scripted show on broadcast and winning the night,” he said. “The cast is eager to return, and we’re still delivering strong episodes.”

Selleck’s career has seen its share of high points and conflicts. Before his iconic role in Magnum, P.I., he struggled with small roles and unremarkable TV pilots. An offer from Steven Spielberg for Raiders of the Lost Ark came around the same time as Magnum, but Selleck chose the TV role. In his memoir, You Never Know, he describes this decision as “the world series of disappointments,” but ultimately found peace with it.

Magnum, P.I., which premiered in 1980, was a hit partly due to Selleck’s insistence on keeping the character’s Vietnam War background. The show even attracted Frank Sinatra, who wanted to guest star on the condition he could “beat someone up”—a role he fulfilled in his final acting appearance.

Selleck’s portrayal of Magnum, with his signature mustache and charisma, cemented his status as an ‘80s sex symbol and remains a defining element of his legendary career.
