Tom Selleck Expresses Frustration Over ‘Blue Bloods’ Cancellation: “The Show Was Never Fully Appreciated”

Tom Selleck is grappling with how to bid farewell to Frank Reagan. Recently, he expressed his frustration over CBS’s decision to cancel Blue Bloods, feeling that the show was taken for granted during its impressive 14-year run.

“During those last eight episodes, I wanted to focus on the show’s continued success, not its ending,” Selleck, who portrays the NYPD commissioner in the CBS drama, shared in an interview with TV Insider.

He referenced a list of top shows for the 2023-24 season, noting, “If you exclude the three football shows, we’re ranked #6!” While he admitted he doesn’t want to become a “bitter old guy saying, ‘Get off my lawn,’” he’s still coming to terms with the network’s choice to end such a successful series. “If you told a network, ‘Here’s a show to put in your worst time slot, and it will guarantee you Friday night victories for 15 years,’ they’d hardly believe it,” he said. “My frustration lies in the fact that the show was always taken for granted, given its strong performance from the start.”

Selleck acknowledged that adjusting to life without Blue Bloods will take time. “After the final episode’s shoot, I found myself saying, ‘I need to go to bed early tonight to prepare my lines for Monday.’ But there was no Monday,” he reflected. “It’s going to be a process.”

In the interview, Selleck also shared insights about the upcoming final episode. “The family dinner will reunite the Reagan family,” he revealed. “Nicky [Sami Gayle] and Jack [Tony Terraciano], Danny’s older son, will be there. We all agreed it was best to close the set for that moment and keep it private.”

He emphasized the special nature of the reunion, considering the cast like family. “Every actor wanted to come back,” he noted. “Most shows don’t end this way—often there’s jealousy and tension—but we managed to overcome that. It’s something we can all be proud of.”
