“Tom Selleck Nearly Shaved His Iconic Mustache for ‘Blue Bloods’”
Remember Tom Selleck’s iconic moustache from ‘Friends’? Well, the 79-year-old actor almost parted ways with his signature facial hair for his role as police commissioner Frank Reagan on ‘Blue Bloods’. Despite the character’s high-ranking position, which led Selleck to believe that a moustache wouldn’t fit, CBS ultimately decided against it, and Selleck kept his trademark look.
Selleck revealed to ‘People’ magazine that he was prepared to shave off his moustache to align with the character’s role, stating, “At the time, they had him as the New York City police chief. That’s not the boss in New York, the way it’s structured. And I said, ‘Well, I don’t think they can have moustaches, so I’ll shave off my moustache’. And (executive producer) Leonard (Goldberg) said, ‘Let me check with CBS’. And they said no.”
Throughout his early career, Selleck frequently faced requests to remove his moustache, but he grew accustomed to it. He did make an exception for the 1997 film ‘In & Out’, where he portrayed reporter Peter Malloy opposite Kevin Kline.
Selleck reflected on his acting career’s origins, noting, “It is really the story of an accidental career,” which began with commercials and appearances on ‘The Dating Game’.
