“Tom Selleck Plans to Tackle a Western After ‘Blue Bloods’”
Tom Selleck is ready to saddle up for a new chapter in his career.
After 14 years portraying NYPD Commissioner Frank Reagan on Blue Bloods, the 79-year-old actor is stepping away from his iconic role, but he’s far from retiring. Selleck is eager to explore new acting opportunities, and one project in particular has caught his attention—working with Yellowstone creator Taylor Sheridan on a Western.
Selleck recently opened up about his post-Blue Bloods plans, admitting that he’s currently “unemployed,” but not for long. “I wouldn’t say [offers] are pouring in, but maybe some people are thinking of me,” he joked.
The actor, known for his roles in both television and film, has expressed a strong desire to return to the Western genre, a type of role he’s always enjoyed. “A good Western’s always on my list,” he said. “I miss that; I want to sit on a horse again.”
Beyond the possibility of a Western, Selleck has also hinted at bringing back his beloved Jesse Stone character, a role he played in a series of TV movies from 2005 to 2015.
Selleck’s history with Westerns goes back decades. He starred in the 1990 film Quigley Down Under as an American sharpshooter hired by an Australian rancher, only to discover his employer’s horrific plans. Though initially hesitant about taking the role of Matthew Quigley, which he described as “bigger-than-life” and ideal for someone like John Wayne, Selleck eventually took it on and earned praise for his portrayal.
He’s also appeared in other notable Western projects like Monte Walsh (2003), Last Stand at Sabre River (1997), Crossfire Trail (2001), and The Shadow Riders (1982), as well as the miniseries The Sacketts (1979). In fact, he almost starred in the iconic 1989 miniseries Lonesome Dove, but his Magnum P.I. commitments forced him to pass on the role of Jake Spoon, which ultimately went to his friend Robert Urich.
Despite missing out on that opportunity, Selleck’s love for Westerns has remained strong. “Every hiatus from Magnum I thought, I gotta find a Western,” he said, and it looks like he’s ready to do just that.
With a long history of Western roles, Selleck is more than ready for his next cowboy adventure.
