“Tom Selleck Reflects on His Proud Military Journey as a Veteran”
This Veterans Day, we’re celebrating notable celebrities who have served in the U.S. military.
Before gaining fame on MAGNUM P.I., Tom Selleck was a sergeant in the National Guard, serving in the U.S. Army infantry. Initially a business major at the University of Southern California, he switched to acting after encouragement from a drama coach. Selleck started with commercials and small TV roles before joining Twentieth Century Fox.
Recalling his early career, the BLUE BLOODS star noted, “When I went to Fox, I was on my own with no frame of reference, no connection,” and earned about $35 a week, facing regular renewals or terminations. After being drafted, he returned to Fox but was eventually let go, leading to more minor roles until he landed the iconic role of Thomas Magnum in 1980.
“I am a veteran; I’m proud of it,” Selleck stated, reflecting on his service during the Vietnam War from 1967-73. He emphasized the bond among soldiers, saying, “We’re all brothers and sisters in that sense.” Selleck actively supports the military and has participated in public service announcements for the National Guard, advocating for the welcome of returning troops regardless of political sentiments.
At 78, Selleck attributes his success to God, explaining, “A man’s heart plans his way, but the Lord directs his steps.” He values ethics and humility, critiquing a culture focused solely on individual feelings.
Selleck will release a memoir titled You Never Know in May 2024, promising a personal but reserved narrative, steering clear of celebrity gossip. “It’s not going to be a score-settling thing or a who-I-dated thing,” he assured.
His memoir aims to share his journey from USC basketball courts to Hollywood, filled with ups and downs. In his authentic voice, Selleck offers insights into his life, friendships with icons like Frank Sinatra and James Garner, and clears up misconceptions about his career.
