This decision has sparked a campaign to save the series, although CBS Entertainment President Amy Reisenbach has firmly stated that the show will end this year.
In a recent interview with CBS News, Selleck expressed his belief that CBS might reconsider its decision. He pointed to the show’s impressive performance, being one of the highest-rated scripted programs on broadcast television and consistently drawing in around 5 million viewers each week. Selleck noted, “I will continue to think that CBS will come to their senses. We’re winning the night, and all the cast wants to come back. We’re still producing strong episodes and holding our ground.”
The announcement of the show’s ending came as a surprise, especially given its loyal audience. While it doesn’t match the viewership of other CBS hits like Tracker or NCIS, Blue Bloods outperforms several current shows like S.W.A.T. and FBI: Most Wanted. The show’s longstanding presence on CBS makes its cancellation even more unexpected.
However, Reisenbach’s recent comments suggest that CBS’s future lineup is set, with new series like NCIS: Origins and a Young Sheldon spinoff slated for the 2024-25 season. With Fire Country also getting a spinoff confirmed for 2025-26, it appears there may be no room for a Blue Bloods continuation. Still, there is a precedent for last-minute renewals; S.W.A.T. was renewed for its eighth season despite earlier announcements that its seventh would be its last.
While Selleck’s optimism is notable, the show’s future remains uncertain. CBS could choose to pursue a spinoff or a different continuation of the Blue Bloods story, but that wouldn’t guarantee a return for the current cast.
