“Tom Selleck Reveals All in New Memoir ‘You Never Know’: Intimate Stories from the ‘Blue Bloods’ Star”
Tom Selleck has already showcased his writing skills through his collaboration on the critically acclaimed Jesse Stone films alongside Michael Brandman. Now, the beloved TV icon is shifting the spotlight to his personal and professional experiences in his upcoming memoir, You Never Know.
In a 2021 interview with Parade, Selleck emphasized the book’s intimate nature, stating, “It’s very personal. I can tell you what it won’t be: It’s not going to be a score-settling thing. It’s not going to be a who-I-dated thing. There’s a certain level of privacy, but I’m being extremely intimate about how everything has affected me.” According to a press release from Dey Street Books, an imprint of Harper Collins, the memoir will provide a deeply personal glimpse into the story of his “remarkable life and thoroughly accidental career.”
The release further details how the celebrated actor will take readers on a serendipitous journey through Hollywood, sharing his temptations and distractions, misfires and mistakes, and the well-earned successes that followed. Despite his illustrious career, Selleck faced challenges before hitting his big break. He started with a role on the soap opera The Young and the Restless as Jed Andrews but found international fame as Thomas Magnum on Magnum, P.I.
“From the USC basketball court to a happy accident, to discovering and then embracing the work I love—it’s been a long, bumpy road with some singles, some home runs, and a lot of strikeouts. I figure it’s time to share the ride,” said Selleck. Along the way, he formed friendships with stars like Frank Sinatra, Carol Burnett, Sam Elliott, and James Garner, who he considers a mentor. These relationships feature prominently in his memoir, revealing stories that have never been told before.
“Hollywood is never easy, even for those who make it look that way,” the autobiography’s description notes. In You Never Know, Selleck reflects on the struggles of balancing his personal and professional lives, often adjusting his career to maintain his family’s privacy and normalcy.
He will also discuss his transition into comedy as Dr. Richard Burke, Monica’s older boyfriend on Friends, and his ongoing role as NYPD Commissioner Frank Reagan on the hit CBS series Blue Bloods, which is now entering its 14th season.
