“Tom Selleck Reveals He’s Never Used Email or Text Messages”

Tom Selleck’s forthcoming memoir, You Never Know, offers a revealing glimpse into his life and career, including his choice to stay disconnected from technology and his unplanned rise to fame.

“I’ve occasionally looked up my name,” Selleck told PEOPLE while discussing his technological avoidance. “That curiosity started with the book, but I’ve never sent an email myself. I’ve always had a secretary for that. I’ve never texted anyone.”

Selleck acknowledged his unique position of privilege, admitting, “I have a certain luxury where I probably couldn’t survive otherwise. But I struggle with writing things down, which is ironic for someone promoting a book.”

In You Never Know, Selleck shares the journey of his life and career, revealing that becoming an actor was never his intention. “I didn’t have the usual hooks,” he reflected. “I didn’t rehabilitate myself or have a tragic past. I’ve had my share of ups and downs, but I’ve been fortunate.”

Selleck also emphasizes that despite the glamour, acting is not an easy path. “If you’re entering the acting business, you’d better have a strong passion for it,” he advised. “It’s a long road, and I wanted to convey that.”

The memoir illustrates Selleck’s unexpected career trajectory. “It’s really the story of an accidental career,” he explained. “I had no formal training or desire for fame. People might say, ‘He was bitten by the acting bug,’ but that’s not how I see it. I just wanted to find work.”

Despite his extensive experience in the industry, Selleck admitted to initial doubts about the book’s appeal. “It’s a lot about failures and perseverance,” he said. “I was concerned whether a book about my life would be interesting enough, given the ups and downs.”
