“Tom Selleck Rings in 80th Birthday with Solo McDonald’s Drive-Thru Adventure”
Tom Selleck celebrated his 80th birthday on Wednesday, January 29, with a low-key visit to McDonald’s, where he enjoyed a fast-food burger in his car. The Blue Bloods and Magnum P.I. star was spotted by paparazzi during his solo drive-thru trip.
While some labeled the birthday outing as “lonely,” many of his fans found the gesture to be perfectly relatable. One fan wrote on X/Twitter, “Honestly, that sounds perfect to me,” while another chimed in, “This beats any birthday party. Nice one, Selleck.” A third fan expressed a similar sentiment, saying, “This is what I want for my birthday… to be left alone. Especially if I’m rich and getting those sweet, sweet residuals.” Another commented, “Dude earned it,” and one more marveled, “He looks like that and he’s EIGHTY? I need to eat more fast food.”
However, some questioned the notion of Selleck celebrating his birthday at all, recalling previous interviews where he mentioned no longer observing the occasion. “I’m trying not to count. I stopped celebrating birthdays a while back. I intend to keep working,” he once said. He also mentioned a quiet dinner with his brother, sister, and wife, Jillie, as his typical way to mark the day without making a big deal of it.
Despite the low-key celebration, Selleck recently reflected on his post-“Blue Bloods” life. The long-running police procedural, which ended its final season in December, had become a significant part of his career. Selleck humorously referred to himself as “unemployed” and revealed that while job offers weren’t exactly flooding in, he was still hopeful for future opportunities. “A good Western’s always on my list,” he said, hinting at his desire to get back on horseback in a future role.
The cancellation of Blue Bloods after its 14th season, following a pay reduction deal with CBS, left Selleck and his co-stars feeling “sad” and “frustrated.” He expressed his disappointment in an October 2024 interview, noting, “I haven’t wanted to talk about an ending for Blue Bloods, but about it still being wildly successful.”
Reflecting on the show’s success, Selleck added, “I’m not going to turn into a bitter old guy saying, ‘Get off my lawn!’” He explained his frustration stemmed from how the network took the show’s success for granted. “If you were to say to the television network, ‘Here’s a show you can program in the worst time slot you’ve got, and it’s going to guarantee you winning Friday night for the next 15 years,’ it would be almost impossible to believe.” Despite his feelings, he maintained he wouldn’t harbor any grudges, though it may take time to fully process the end of such a significant chapter in his career.
