Tom Selleck Shares His Aversion to Texting and Email: “I Struggle with Writing Things Down”
Tom Selleck acknowledges the irony of admitting he has “a hard time writing things down” while promoting his upcoming memoir, but it’s part of why he shies away from technology. In a recent interview with People, the Blue Bloods star revealed that he has never sent a text message or an email.
“Occasionally, I’ve looked up my name,” he explained, noting that curiosity about his memoir prompted it. “But I’ve never sent my own email. I had a secretary handle that. I’ve never texted anyone.”
Selleck shared that his wife, Jillie, has been known to text on his behalf. “I have a certain luxury that I probably couldn’t survive without,” he admitted. “But I really do struggle with writing things down, which is odd for someone publishing a book.”
His memoir, You Never Know, reflects on his extensive career, from small films and commercials to his iconic role in Magnum P.I. and his memorable part on Friends, which he describes as almost “accidental.”
“I don’t have the hooks that many do,” Selleck confessed, revealing that acting wasn’t always his passion; he simply sought steady work. “I didn’t have a tragic life or need to rehabilitate myself. I’ve had my ups and downs, but I’ve been very fortunate.”
The memoir is a candid look into his journey in acting, emphasizing that anyone entering the industry needs a strong appetite for it. “I tried to convey that in the book… it’s been a long road,” he said.
As he prepares to bid farewell to Blue Bloods, which will enter its fourteenth and final season this fall, Selleck reflected on the show’s remarkable run. “I always thought the show had enormous potential. It’s character-driven, allowing the story to evolve as characters age,” he noted.
His co-star Donnie Wahlberg echoed this sentiment, expressing surprise at the show’s longevity. “For anyone in acting or show business, you need a mix of luck, a caring audience, and a great team. So many elements contribute to success. When we started, I thought it would last a while, but 13 years is incredible,” he shared.
