“Tom Selleck Shares the Heartwarming Blue Bloods Moment That Brought the Cast Together as a True Family”

As Blue Bloods approaches its final season, stars Tom Selleck and Donnie Wahlberg are reflecting on some of their most cherished moments from the show.

Since the CBS procedural first aired in 2010, Selleck and Wahlberg have portrayed Frank and Danny Reagan for 14 seasons. With the recent announcement that the series will conclude this fall, the actors are looking back on their time as the iconic Reagan family.

One of the show’s hallmark elements is the Reagan family’s Sunday dinners, which have become a fan favorite. In an excerpt from Emmy magazine’s June issue shared by People, Donnie Wahlberg reminisced about the significance of these scenes. He recalled, “At the first dinner scene, I had to fully commit to my character, his thoughts, and be willing to shake up that dinner table. And to do that with Tom Selleck at the head of the table? He’s an icon.”

Wahlberg also spoke about the pressure of staying true to his character, even if it meant offering feedback to the writers. He said, “I had to make the commitment to go there with him. If I didn’t do it in the pilot, I wouldn’t be able to do it later on.” Similarly, Tom Selleck shared how deeply meaningful the Sunday dinner scenes are for him, focusing not just on the dialogue but on the underlying emotions. “Audiences don’t care about the words; they want to see the subtext,” he explained. “The family dinners are rich with subtext, and the audience understands what the characters are feeling.”

Wahlberg noted that these dinner scenes have fostered a genuine bond among the cast, both on and off-screen. “There’s a real affection when we come together for these scenes,” he said. “By the end of each dinner scene, if anyone is struggling, they’re reminded of how fortunate we are. We’re grateful not just for being together as a family on-screen, but also for our safety and the opportunity to work together. The dinner scenes have become a reminder of our good fortune, both as characters and as actors.”
