Why Is Kevin Costner Searching for Sunken Treasure?
Kevin Costner couldn’t care less about all the negative headlines dragging his name through the mud. The rumors about him clashing with Wes Bentley on the set of Yellowstone? The lawsuits? The whispers that he’s struggling to secure funding to complete his four-part western film series? None of it seems to faze him.
A source close to the former Yellowstone star reveals something unexpected: “Kevin Costner is currently obsessed with deep-sea diving to hunt for sunken treasure.”
Wait, seriously?
The source adds, “He recently discovered gold coins and emeralds in the Caribbean. Now, he’s pitching a TV series focused on uncovering sunken treasures around the globe.” That’s right—Costner is going full National Treasure after appearing in several Yellowstone National Park history specials for Fox Nation. He’s practically channeling Ben Franklin’s bifocals to decode the secrets of the Declaration of Independence and chase the lost city of Atlantis.
This might sound surprising unless you recall his mariner role in the 1995 box-office flop Waterworld. In fact, this treasure-hunting idea isn’t new—Costner first pitched it back in 2019. In a Facebook video posted by his maritime partner, underwater archaeologist Alex Mirabal, Costner shared how they met while exploring a Portuguese shipwreck off Mozambique. Just this March, the duo even visited the nautical archives at Havana’s Castillo de la Real Fuerza Museum.
“Alex and I have been passionate about bringing history to life,” Costner said in the 2019 video. “We’ve formed a company and are currently searching for a boat.”
Costner and Mirabal are still on the hunt for investors. Since departing Yellowstone, funding has been Costner’s elusive white whale. Maybe, just maybe, he can finance the Horizon sequel by selling a chest of Davy Jones’ treasure.
