Why Tom Selleck Has ‘Vowed’ To Never Refer to His Iconic Show as ‘Magnum P.I.’

As Tom Selleck prepares for the potential conclusion of “Blue Bloods” in 2024, he’s reflecting on his previous work, notably his role in the iconic ’80s series. Before Jay Hernandez took on the role of Thomas Magnum in the reboot, Selleck famously portrayed the private investigator, complete with his signature mustache. Despite “Magnum P.I.” remaining popular today, with both the original series and its revival, Selleck has made it clear that he will never refer to the show by its full title. The original “Magnum P.I.” aired for eight seasons, totaling 162 episodes, from 1980 to 1988. In a recent interview with Esquire, Selleck revisited his time on the show, revealing his dislike for the title and his preference for shortening it when discussing it.
