“Why Tom Selleck Refuses to Call His Iconic Show ‘Magnum P.I.'”

Tom Selleck might be gearing up for the conclusion of “Blue Bloods” in 2024, but he’s reflecting on his earlier role with a distinct perspective. Before Jay Hernandez stepped into the shoes of Thomas Magnum, Selleck made the character iconic in the ‘80s, sporting his trademark mustache as the private investigator. Despite the enduring popularity of “Magnum P.I.”—which includes both the original series and its reboot—Selleck has made a point to avoid using the show’s full title. The original “Magnum P.I.” aired for eight seasons, from 1980 to 1988, totaling 162 episodes. In a recent interview with Esquire, Selleck revisited his experience on the show, revealing his aversion to its title. He admitted that he has always preferred to refer to it in a shortened form.
