Why Tom Selleck Remains Optimistic About a Blue Bloods Renewal

Tom Selleck Remains Hopeful for a Blue Bloods Revival

Despite CBS officially canceling Blue Bloods last fall, Tom Selleck is still optimistic that the network might reconsider its decision. His belief is rooted in past experiences with network decisions that he felt were misguided.

“I truly believe CBS will come to their senses. We’re the third-highest scripted show on broadcast television, winning the night. The entire cast wants to return. I can assure you—we’re not fading; we’re producing great episodes and maintaining our position,” Selleck shared with CBS News.

Although Blue Bloods faced cancellation due to rising production costs, a significant pay cut from the main cast allowed for a final season, which was split between spring and fall due to strike-related delays. Selleck continues to advocate for a renewal, asserting, “CBS will discover that many viewers aren’t ready to say goodbye. We definitely still have plenty of ideas.”

This isn’t the first time Selleck has stood up against network decisions. During the 1980s, while filming Magnum P.I., CBS wanted to eliminate a storyline that highlighted Thomas Magnum’s Vietnam War service. Selleck fought to keep this important aspect, which ultimately contributed to the show’s lasting legacy.

“When Magnum ended after eight seasons, the Smithsonian called to honor the series and requested artifacts,” he recalled. “They took my hat, my Vietnam team ring, and that iconic red Hawaiian shirt. When we visited, they credited us for being the first show to portray Vietnam veterans positively. So that fight was worthwhile.”

While a similar honor for Blue Bloods may not be on the horizon, Selleck believes the series is not finished just yet. “I’m not counting down the days to move on to something else. I love this work. The hours can be tougher now that I’m older, but that’s part of it. I want to keep working as long as I can,” he said in an interview with TV Insider.

His determination has inspired fans to take action, creating a significant social media movement to advocate for the show’s continuation.

Since CBS announced Blue Bloods would conclude after Season 14 last November, fans have mobilized to keep the show alive. The “Save Blue Bloods” campaign encourages viewers to amplify their voices on social media, particularly on Fridays when new episodes air. The campaign, led by the account @SaveBlueBloods, highlights the show’s ratings and popularity.

Their mission is to “cancel the cancel,” aiming to generate enough social media buzz and support to change CBS’s mind. The account has already gathered over 12,000 signatures on its petition and continues to collect fan videos from set visits in New York to create a tribute to the series.
