‘Yellowstone’ Star Luke Grimes Says Kevin Costner’s Departure Made This Season the Easiest to Film
Luke Grimes, star of Yellowstone, opened up about filming the final episodes of season five without Kevin Costner, calling it a “breath of fresh air.” While he isn’t “pointing any fingers,” Grimes said Costner’s absence removed some of the tension on set, making it the easiest season they’ve filmed.
“Hopefully, everyone can see it was time,” Grimes said about Costner’s departure. “To be honest, with Kevin gone, some of the conflict disappeared. It wasn’t always easy, but it ended up being the easiest season we’ve done.”
The Yellowstone series finale is set to air on December 15, and Grimes feels the timing is right after seven years of playing Kayce Dutton. “Seven years is a long time to play a character,” he reflected. “I’ve loved it all, but there’s a sense of closure when you read those final episodes.”
When asked about possible spin-offs, Grimes expressed some uncertainty. “There’s always talk of spin-offs. I’d consider it, but I don’t see how it fits once the story ends. Kayce wants a simple life — cowboys, family, peace. He’s done with the violence and the heavy burden of a massive ranch.”
Grimes also shared how series creator Taylor Sheridan intentionally kept the ending a secret from him. “Taylor said, ‘I know how it ends, but I don’t want you to know — it would change how you play Kayce.’ I waited to read the final script until we filmed the last episode. When I finally did, it really hit me. I felt connected to the story and couldn’t imagine it ending any other way.”
Interestingly, Grimes admitted he’s not the biggest fan of Yellowstone at the moment. “I want to like the show, but it’s hard since I was still in it. Maybe in a couple of years, after I’ve had time to step away, I’ll watch it all again and appreciate it more.”
