The Yellowstone Universe Expands With a Kayce Dutton-Led Spinoff — But Who’s Returning for Y: Marshals?
Since its premiere in 2018, Yellowstone has become a television phenomenon, introducing audiences to the powerful Dutton family and their massive Montana ranch. Created by Taylor Sheridan, the franchise has since grown with hit prequels like 1883 and 1923.
While a new spinoff starring Matthew McConaughey was previously teased, it appears to have been replaced by a different present-day series titled The Madison. Meanwhile, fans are still waiting on updates for 6666, a planned spinoff focused on Jimmy Hurdstrom (Jefferson White) and the Four Sixes Ranch in Texas.
But CBS is now expanding the Yellowstone world even further with Y: Marshals, a new series centered around Kayce Dutton (played by Luke Grimes). The story follows Kayce as he leaves behind ranch life to join an elite team of U.S. Marshals. The show will also star Arielle Kebbel, Ash Santos, Tatanka Means, Brett Cullen, and Logan Marshall-Green alongside Grimes.
So, which familiar faces from Yellowstone are joining Kayce on this new chapter — and who’s not returning? Here’s a breakdown:
Returning Cast Members
- Luke Grimes (Kayce Dutton)
Kayce takes the spotlight in Y: Marshals as he transitions from rancher to U.S. Marshal, blending his experience as a cowboy and Navy SEAL to bring justice to Montana. The series will explore his struggle to balance duty, family, and the emotional toll of law enforcement. - Gil Birmingham (Thomas Rainwater)
Birmingham is confirmed to reprise his role as Thomas Rainwater, the chief of the Broken Rock Reservation. - Mo Brings Plenty (Mo)
Mo will return for Season 1, continuing his role alongside Rainwater. - Brecken Merrill (Tate Dutton)
Merrill is back as Tate, Kayce and Monica’s son, maintaining continuity within the Dutton family.
Not Returning (At Least for Now)
- Kevin Costner (John Dutton)
Costner is not expected to appear in Y: Marshals, unless the show incorporates flashbacks featuring his character. - Kelly Reilly (Beth Dutton)
Reilly will remain in the Yellowstone universe but is set to lead a separate spinoff that’s currently in development. - Cole Hauser (Rip Wheeler)
Like Reilly, Hauser will reprise his role as Rip, but in the same spinoff as Beth — not Y: Marshals. - Kelsey Asbille (Monica Dutton)
Asbille, who played Kayce’s wife Monica, is notably absent from the confirmed cast. Her involvement in Y: Marshals has not been announced.
