🚨 Why Was Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 2 Delayed? Everything We Know About Kevin Costner’s Western Sequel

Will Kevin Costner’s ‘Horizon: Chapter 2’ Ever Be Released? Here’s What We Know

Almost two years after its disappointing box-office performance, Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1 is experiencing a resurgence thanks to streaming. The western drama, starring Kevin Costner, recently became available on Prime Video, attracting viewers who missed it during its theatrical debut in 2024.

The film first arrived on Max in August 2024 before leaving the service in February 2026. Its addition to Prime Video appears to have reignited audience interest in Costner’s ambitious western epic.

The project was envisioned as a four-film saga, with Costner serving as star, director, and co-writer. For years, he described the series as a passion project inspired by the grand westerns of classic Hollywood, aiming to tell an expansive story about America’s frontier era.

The first installment premiered in theaters on June 28, 2024. Originally, the plan was to release Horizon: Chapter 2 shortly afterward, with an August 16, 2024 release date intended to maintain momentum and keep audiences engaged.

However, those plans changed after the first film struggled commercially. Chapter 1 earned roughly $29 million domestically and around $38 million worldwide, falling short of expectations.

As a result, New Line Cinema announced in July 2024 that the sequel would be delayed. The studio explained that the decision would give viewers more time to discover the first film through premium video-on-demand platforms and Max before moving on to the next chapter.

Costner’s production company, Territory Pictures, echoed that reasoning, stating that extending the viewing window for the first installment would help audiences become more invested in the story and ultimately improve the experience of watching the sequel.

Although Chapter 2 lost its original theatrical release slot, the film was never canceled. It premiered at the Venice Film Festival on September 7, 2024, and later screened at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival in February 2025.

Despite those appearances, the sequel still lacks an official release date, leaving many fans uncertain about the future of the franchise.

Costner has remained committed to the project. In late 2024, he acknowledged that he was still working to secure support for the continuation of the series, expressing hope that the remaining chapters could eventually move forward.

For now, the future of Horizon remains unclear. While Chapter 2 has been completed and screened publicly, there is still no confirmed release date, and the planned third and fourth films have yet to receive the green light.
