Kevin Costner and Ryan Reynolds’ 2016 Sci-Fi Film “Criminal” Finds a New Streaming Home

Next month, Kevin Costner and Ryan Reynolds’ 2016 sci-fi thriller Criminal will make its debut on Max starting September 1. The film features a star-studded cast, including Gal Gadot, Jordi Mollá, Gary Oldman, Tommy Lee Jones, and Amaury Nolasco. Criminal centers around a death row inmate who is implanted with the memories of a deceased CIA operative to thwart a deadly conspiracy. Despite its impressive ensemble, the film has received mixed reviews, holding a 30% rating from critics and a 47% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Criminal was penned by Douglas Cook and David Weisberg. Cook, known for his work on the 1996 action film The Rock, collaborated with Weisberg, who co-wrote The Rock and also worked with Tommy Lee Jones on the 1999 thriller Double Jeopardy. Directed by Ariel Vromen, the film is one of his few projects in the past eight years. Vromen’s other notable works include the 2018 biographical drama The Angel, which is available on Netflix, and the 2021 action thriller 1922, starring Tyrese Gibson and the late Ray Liotta. Vromen is perhaps best known for directing the 2012 crime thriller The Iceman, featuring Michael Shannon, Chris Evans, and Winona Ryder.

Before Criminal arrives on Max, viewers can catch Costner in his recent film Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1, which he also directed. The film, which stars Sienna Miller and Sam Worthington, struggled at the box office, earning just $30 million against its $100 million production cost. Despite its poor performance, a sequel is currently scheduled to premiere at the Venice International Film Festival on September 7.

Stay tuned to Collider for the latest streaming updates and catch Criminal on Max beginning September 1.
