Kevin Costner’s Vision for a Different Yellowstone Ending
Kevin Costner Can’t Quit the Old West
Try as he might to leave Yellowstone behind and focus on his ambitious four-part Horizon film series, Kevin Costner just can’t seem to escape the pull of the Old West. His long-running mission to tell the American frontier story on his own terms may now be facing its toughest challenge yet.
“Horizon feels like thirty-five years ago,” Costner joked in a recent interview. The comment came during a discussion about the 35th anniversary of Dances with Wolves, though Costner’s mind remains fixed on his latest project. “Part Two is done, and I hope to make Parts Three and Four,” he said.
But whether those next chapters of Horizon ever come to life is uncertain. In pursuing his passion project, Costner stepped away from one of his most iconic roles: John Dutton in Yellowstone. Reportedly, scheduling conflicts and contract disputes led to his exit, and creator Taylor Sheridan wrote the character off-screen—an absence that threw the show’s fifth season into chaos.
Still, Costner speaks positively about the series that earned him a third Golden Globe. “It’s modern-day ranching,” he said. “Yellowstone captured that beautifully. I mean, it’s a bit of a soap opera. We should all be in prison,” he joked.
While the Duttons may have avoided prison, the franchise is far from over. Sheridan is developing multiple spin-offs to keep the Yellowstone legacy alive, and it’s likely that Paramount would welcome Costner back—at least for flashbacks.
“I loved the show,” Costner said. “I liked the people, I liked what it was about. I love that world… I’ve always felt it might be interesting to come back and finish the mythology of this modern-day family. If that happens—and if I agree with how it’s being done—I’d be open to stepping back in.”
