“Why Kevin Costner Sued His Own Movie More Than a Decade Later”

Kevin Costner Once Sued His Own Movie—Here’s Why

Kevin Costner has long had a reputation for being a passionate and hands-on filmmaker. While some label him difficult, others see him as a perfectionist, fiercely dedicated to his craft. That intensity has led to both critically acclaimed hits like Field of Dreams and infamous misfires like Waterworld.

As his career progressed, Costner became increasingly involved in the production side of filmmaking. That business savvy came in handy years after the release of Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves—when he ended up suing the studio behind it.

Released in 1991 and directed by Kevin Reynolds, Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves offered a darker, more action-driven take on the classic legend. It was a box office success, grossing over $390 million worldwide. But despite the film’s massive profits, Costner alleged he never saw the share he was contractually owed.

More than a decade after its release, Costner filed a lawsuit against Morgan Creek Productions, accusing them of fraud and breach of contract. The actor claimed that the company withheld financial information and deliberately misrepresented profits to avoid paying him. According to his contract, Costner was entitled to 12.5% of gross profits after the film earned $60 million and 15% after it passed $100 million.

Costner didn’t hold back when filing the suit, stating:

“Every actor hopes to star in a great movie that makes substantial profits. But if you’re hoping to earn profits based on the success of your film and you want to be paid on a timely basis, then one company you certainly do not want to do business with is Defendant Morgan Creek Productions.”

The dispute highlights a recurring issue in Hollywood: even major stars aren’t immune to the murky world of studio accounting. Costner’s case echoes more recent high-profile battles, such as Scarlett Johansson’s lawsuit against Disney over the release strategy of Black Widow.

Ultimately, Costner’s legal battle serves as a cautionary tale about the darker side of the industry. Behind the glamour of a box office hit, there are often complicated and sometimes contentious financial dealings. For Costner, it was a hard lesson in the importance of transparency—and choosing your partners wisely.
